New Delhi, April 9 – The Supreme Court on Thursday dismissed the plea by 1993 Mumbai serial bomb blast mastermind Yaqub Abdul Razak Memon for a review of his death sentence. 


Memon had sought the recall of March 21, 2013, apex court order upholding his death sentence by the special court. 


The apex court bench of Justice Anil R. Dave, Justice J. Chelameswar and Justice Kurian Joseph in its order said the review plea is dismissed. The court had reserved its verdict March 25, 2015.

Paris, April 9 – The French television network ‘TV5Monde’ said it suffered an attack from hackers from the Islamic State (IS) terror group, media reported on Thursday. 


TV5Monde said its TV station, web site and social media accounts were all hit, BBC reported.


The hackers also posted documents purporting to be ID cards of relatives of French soldiers involved in anti-IS operations.

New Delhi, April 9 – President Pranab Mukherjee has given his nod to convening the Rajya Sabha for a fresh session from April 23, officials said on Thursday. 


The upper house was prorogued during the break of parliament’s budget session and will now meet for its 235th session.


The Rajya Sabha session will end on May 13.


The Lok Sabha will meet as scheduled earlier from April 20 and will conclude on May 8 in the second part of the budget session.

Hyderabad, April 9 – A special CBI court on Thursday found B. Ramalinga Raju, his brother Rama Raju and eight others guilty in the multi-crore Satyam scam. 


Ramalinga Raju, the Satyam Computer Services Limited’s founder and former chairman, and his brother were found guilty of criminal breach of trust, a CBI lawyer said.


Eight others were declared guilty of criminal conspiracy in the country’s biggest accounting fraud that left the corporate world stunned in 2009. 

Washington, April 9 – NASA’s Mars Atmosphere and Volatile EvolutioN (MAVEN) probe – the first mission ever devoted to understanding the Martian upper atmosphere – has completed 1,000 orbits around the Red Planet, four-and-a-half months into its one-year primary mission. 


MAVEN is in its science mapping orbit and has been taking data since the start of its primary mission on November 16 last year.

Lucknow, April 9 – Shankracharya Swaroopanand Saraswati has sought a law on protecting cows and asked Prime Minister Narendra Modi to take initiatives in this regard. He has also demanded a nationwide beef ban. 


The seer, who was in Allahabad for a religious congregation, said late on Wednesday that with a pro-Hindu government at the centre, this was the right time to enact a law to protect cows.


He also slammed retired Supreme Court (SC) judge Justice Markandey Katju’s statements which criticised beef ban in Maharashtra and Haryana.

Rio de Janerio, April 9 – The local organisers of Rio 2016 Olympic Games unveiled a laboratory that will test equipment used to beam real-time information during the Games, a media report said on Thursday. 


Operated by global digital services provider Atos – an official Olympic partner – the facility, unveiled on Wednesday, will be integrated with scoring and timing systems for competition venues, according to Rio2016.com.


During the Games, the equipment will process data such as results, medal tables, athlete profiles and schedules, Xinhua reported.

Islamabad, April 9 – Pakistan’s Supreme Court announced the formation of a commission headed by Chief Justice Nasirul Mulk to probe the alleged rigging in the 2013 general election, media reported Thursday. 


The three-member commission was formed following the ordinance issued by President Mamnoon Hussain to proceed with the formation of a judicial commission, Dawn online reported.

Jaipur, April 9 – Hindustan Zinc, a Vedanta Group company, and Vedanta Foundation have adopted 3,056 anganwadi centres in five districts of Rajasthan. 


The adoption will benefit 90,000 underprivileged children in the age group of 3-6 years in Udaipur, Chittorgarh, Bhilwara, Rajsamand and Ajmer districts for five years. 


It will also contribute towards their overall development that would include nutrition, education and primary health. 

New Delhi, April 9 – President Pranab Mukherjee has appointed Syed Nasim Ahmad Zaidi the Chief Election Commissioner (CEC). He will assume his charge on April 19, an official statement said on Thursday. 


Zaidi succeeds Chief Election Commissioner Harishankar Brahma, who demits the office on April 18. 


Zaidi, a 1976 batch IAS officer of Uttar Pradesh cadre, was appointed the election commissioner on August 7, 2012, by the president. He retired as civil aviation secretary on July 31, 2012.

Accra, April 9 – Ghana failed to win the bid to host the 2017 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) as leaders of the Confederation of African (CAF) settled on Gabon. 


Ghana was confident of hosting Africa’s biggest football tournament for the second time in nine years but was unable to make the mark after Gabon swept a majority of the CAF executive committee votes to annex the right on Wednesday, reports Xinhua.


Ghana hosted the 2008 tournament and were placed third after beating neighbours Ivory Coast.
