DGHS Issues Statement on China’s New Virus Human Metapneumovirus Outbreak
New Delhi: The Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS) of India has responded to reports about a new virus outbreak in China. According to media reports, the new virus in China has caused a surge in hospital visits, raising concerns globally. However, DGHS has assured that there is no immediate need for panic regarding the current situation.
Dr. Atul Goel, a senior official at DGHS, clarified that there is no reason to fear the spread of the Human Metapneumovirus (HMPV) reported in China. He advised people to remain cautious and follow preventive measures to protect against respiratory infections.
Addressing concerns over the HMPV virus, Dr. Goel stated that while there are reports of increased cases in China, the virus behaves similarly to other respiratory viruses that cause common colds. He noted that symptoms in older adults and children might resemble those of the flu.
Further, Dr. Goel mentioned that health authorities in India have reviewed the data on respiratory infections in the country. As per the data available until December, there has been no significant change in respiratory virus trends. He explained that respiratory infections typically see a rise during winter, and hospitals have been advised to prepare with adequate facilities and beds.
The DGHS official urged the public to adopt standard precautions to prevent the spread of respiratory infections. He recommended avoiding close contact with people showing symptoms of cough and cold. Additionally, he emphasized using a handkerchief or tissue while coughing or sneezing and suggested consulting a doctor if one experiences symptoms such as fever and cold.
Key Preventive Measures:
Maintain hygiene and avoid contact with symptomatic individuals.
Use a handkerchief or tissue while sneezing or coughing.
Seek medical attention in case of fever or flu-like symptoms.
