Photographer Who Climbed a Tree and Captured the Pahalgam Attack Becomes Key Witness for NIA

In a critical development in the investigation into the Pahalgam attack, a local photographer—known for filming honeymoon couples and tourists—has emerged as a key witness for the National Investigation Agency (NIA). The photographer, who was at the site when the terror incident occurred, managed to capture significant video footage from atop a tree, making him a vital contributor to the probe.

The violent episode took place on April 22 at Baisaran meadow, a popular tourist destination near Pahalgam in Jammu and Kashmir. The location, usually brimming with tourists and newlyweds, became the scene of terror when four heavily armed militants opened fire. As the gunshots erupted, the photographer, fearing for his life, climbed a tree and managed to film the horrifying incident from above.

According to investigators, the visuals recorded by this individual are of high evidentiary value. Authorities believe that the footage will aid in identifying the assailants and reconstructing the sequence of events during the Pahalgam attack.

Preliminary reports indicate that two militants appeared from behind a row of shops and demanded that several victims recite the “Kalma” before shooting them at point-blank range. The sudden violence caused widespread panic, with tourists fleeing the area. Simultaneously, two more militants opened fire from the zipline area.

The investigation has revealed that the group of four militants—three Pakistani nationals and one local named Adil Thokar—had trekked through forested terrain for nearly 22 hours before reaching the Pahalgam valley. The attackers were armed with advanced weapons, including AK-47 rifles and M4 carbines.

Following the assault, the militants reportedly stole two mobile phones—one belonging to a tourist and the other to a local resident. Authorities are now examining these devices as part of the evidence collection process.

In light of security concerns, the photographer’s identity has been kept confidential. Nonetheless, his footage is considered a major breakthrough in the ongoing probe.

The NIA continues to analyze video recordings and other digital evidence to uncover the full extent of the Pahalgam attack and bring those responsible to justice.
