The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has officially announced the upcoming release of the RBI New Rs.20 notes under the Mahatma Gandhi (New) Series. These updated banknotes will carry the signature of the current RBI Governor, Sanjay Malhotra, and will be introduced into circulation shortly.
In its latest notification, the RBI confirmed that the RBI New Rs.20 notes will retain the same color, dimensions, and design elements as the notes currently in circulation. The new notes will continue to feature the Ellora Caves motif on the reverse side and will include the same security features as before.
The central bank clarified that this update is part of its standard procedure following a change in leadership. The issuance of RBI New Rs.20 notes with the new Governor’s signature is a routine process and will not impact the validity or usability of previously issued ₹20 notes.
All ₹20 notes released in the past, regardless of which Governor’s signature they bear, will remain fully legal tender. The RBI reiterated that there is no change in the value, usage, or acceptance of older ₹20 notes.
This move is consistent with the RBI’s policy of ensuring a smooth and secure currency transition while maintaining the stability and trust associated with Indian currency.
