PV Sindhu enters second Olympic semi-final- India In Olympics- Tokyo 2020 Highlights PV Sindhu, the reigning badminton world champion, progressed to the women’s singles semi-finals at the Tokyo Olympics with a straight-game win against Japan’s Akane Yamaguchi on Friday.  She beat the fourth seed by a scoreline of 21-13, 22-20 in a tight 56-minute encounter. Sindhu dominated the first game, but Yamaguchi came back spectacularly in the second and was defending for the game with a two-point lead at one point.  However, the 26-year old Indian shuttler maintained his composure and rebounded in the second game.  PV Sindhu has taken another stride in delivering her country another medal. Boxing great Mary Kom was knocked out of the Tokyo Olympics after a 3-2 defeat against Colombian Ingrit Victoria Valencia.  Mary Kom and Ingrit Valencia are both the first female boxers from their nations to win an Olympic medal.  Mary Kom was trying to win her second Olympic medal in Tokyo when she was defeated by her opponent. Bazarchapov, competed under the ROC flag, had just two tens in nine arrows, including a seven in the first set. Jadhav, on the other hand, shot four 10s out of nine arrows, demonstrating consistency in his approach. She has defeated German veteran Nadine Apetz in a close last-16 stage bout in Tokyo on Tuesday.  Borgohain mostly used her left hooks to maintain the thin edge.  Both boxers were making their Games debuts, with the Indian becoming the first of her nine-member team to get to the quarterfinals.  The 23-year-old Assamese native won all three rounds on split points.  Borgohain, a bronze medallist at the Asian Championships, will face Chinese Taipei’s Nien-Chin Chen, a former world champion and seeded fourth, on July 30. This is also India’s first appearance at the Tokyo Olympics.  Chanu is India’s second Olympic weightlifting medalist, after Karnam Malleswari.  Malleswari did earn a bronze medal, but Chanu made India, particularly women, proud by winning silver. The Tokyo Olympics 2020 began on Friday night, after a year-long break due to Covid.  The ceremony, which was the most low-key in the games’ history, started with a magnificent fireworks display.  Because of the Covid issue, India only had 22 athletes in the march past.  India’s flag bearers were MC Mary Kom and Manpreet Singh, the Men’s Hockey team captain.  Around 900 people attended the ceremony, including French President Emmanuel Macron and US First Lady Jill Biden. Protesters, on the other hand, have been calling for the postponement of the major event due to the covid outbreak.
