Bhanu Athaiya, India’s first Oscar winner dies

Leading costume designer and India’s first Oscar winner Bhanu Athaiya has passed away.

She is 91 years old.

She won the Oscar for Best Costume Designer for her 1982 film ‘Gandhi.’

Bhanu has been suffering from illness for years.

She breathed her last this morning at her residence in Colaba, Mumbai.

It was revealed by her daughter Radhika.

Radhika explained that her mother Bhanu had been suffering from a brain tumor for the last eight years, but she refused to have surgery.

She said her mother has been unable to walk since 2015.

She was pronounced dead in her sleep this morning.

Bhanu’s funeral was held at the Chandan Wadi Cemetery in Mumbai this afternoon.
