Sourav Ganguly birthday: Mamata brings flowers; how Sachin and Sehwag wished former captain On Thursday, Sourav Ganguly, the president of the BCCI and a former captain of India, turned 49.  West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee paid a visit to the BCCI president’s house in Behala, south Kolkata, to wish him a happy birthday.  Mamatha’s first visit to the cricket legend’s house comes two months after she swept to power in the state.  Ganguly received a bouquet of yellow roses from the chief minister. New Zealand batted first, setting a target of 139. When New Zealand’s score reached 44, Indian spinner Ravichandran Ashwin had taken two wickets. Skipper Kane, who fell short of the half-century mark in the first innings, hit 52 runs in the second. Ross Taylor pitched a valuable 47-pitch inning. In a match against one of the finest teams in the world, Indian batsmen failed to score large. India’s second innings began with an overnight score of 64/2. India was held to 170 points by New Zealand’s bowling attack. Kyle Jamieson of New Zealand led the pace attack with seven wickets, while Tim Southee and Trent Boult also contributed to the dismissal of Indian players. India set an unfavourable record by losing its sixth ICC elimination match. Karnam Malleswari named the first Vice-Chancellor of Delhi Sports University The Delhi government named former Olympic weightlifter Karnam Malleswari as the first Vice Chancellor of Delhi Sports University on Tuesday.  “The Lt Governor, who is also the Chancellor of Delhi Sports University, is proud of having the Padmashri awardee as the university’s first Vice Chancellor,” said an official order.  Malleswari is the first woman weightlifter from India to win an Olympic medal.  She is from the Andhra Pradesh district of Srikakulam and won bronze for India in weightlifting at the 2000 Sydney Olympics. Malleswari is currently employed by the FCI. At the Sydney Olympics in 2000, she made history by lifting 110 kilogrammes and 130 kilogrammes in the’snatch’ and ‘clean and jerk’ categories, respectively.  The Delhi Assembly passed a bill in 2019 to establish a Delhi Sports University (DSU), which will offer graduation, post-graduate, and doctorate degrees in sports such as cricket, football, and hockey, among others.  In recognition of her efforts, the Indian government presented her with the Arjuna Award in 1994 and the Padma Shri Award in 1999. She announced her retirement after competing in the 2004 Olympics in Athens.
