Guardian Movie Review: Cursed Stone & Vengeful Ghost Tale
Guardian Movie Review: Overview
There’s no need to particularly emphasize Hansika’s glamour, but she has indeed impressed audiences with her roles in horror-thrillers. One such film is Guardian, her Tamil venture, which released in theaters last year on March 8. Now, the movie is streaming on Aha. But does Guardian deliver the scares as expected? Let’s find out.
Plot
Aparna (Hansika) has always believed she is unlucky. Every wish of hers goes unfulfilled, and nothing she desires ever comes true. Against this backdrop, she stumbles upon a rare stone one day. From then on, whatever she wishes for comes true—whether good or bad.
As Aparna starts realizing the stone’s power, she also discovers its dark secret—it is linked to a vengeful spirit. Unbeknownst to her, the spirit is seeking revenge on four individuals, and whoever breaks the stone will die. When Aparna accidentally shatters it, chaos ensues. Who becomes the ghost? Who are the four targets? Will the spirit succeed in saving its daughter? The rest of the story unfolds these mysteries.
Analysis
Putting aside whether ghosts exist or not, horror films always attract audiences. Typically, a ghost’s ultimate goal is revenge—terrifying and killing those who wronged them in life, even turning them into ghosts. Guardian follows this same concept without deviation.
While most horror films trap spirits in glass bottles, Guardian introduces a new twist—a spirit bound inside a colored stone. Unfortunately, the film fails to capitalize on this idea effectively. The possession, revenge, and haunting tropes feel repetitive, seen in countless horror films before. The only difference? The actors.
The title Guardian seems misplaced, as it references a minor scene towards the end rather than the core plot. Perhaps the makers realized the story lacked enough substance to justify the title.
Guardian Movie Review: Performances
Hansika was likely chosen for the ghostly role due to her prior experience in horror films. She delivers a decent performance, but the rest of the cast merely reacts in fear, requiring no standout acting.
Guardian Movie Review: Technical Aspects
In horror films, cinematography and background score play crucial roles in building tension. Shakti Vel’s cinematography and Sam CS’s score are passable but not exceptional. Thiyagarajan’s editing feels average at best.
Guardian Movie Review: Verdict
Guardian follows a routine horror narrative, and it’s unclear how Hansika managed to pull it off. The film includes sporadic comedic moments for relief, but they feel unnecessary—pure horror would have worked better. A weak storyline trying to scare audiences? This is the result.
