German Woman Klara Surprises Many by Speaking English in Indian Accent

Klara Attributes Her Indian Accent to Speaking Malayalam

A German teacher currently residing in India has captured widespread attention on social media for fluently speaking English in an Indian accent. Klara, the woman in question, shared a video explaining why she speaks in this manner, addressing a frequent query she receives online: “She’s not Indian, so how does she speak English in an Indian accent?”

In her video, Klara stated, “It’s true, I am not Indian. I am from Germany. Technically, I should be speaking English in a German accent. But there are certain reasons why my English has an Indian accent.”

Elaborating on these reasons, Klara explained, “The first reason is that I only speak English with Indians. When we frequently interact with certain people, we tend to adopt their accent. That’s how I picked up the Indian accent.”

She further added, “The second major reason is that I speak Malayalam. While speaking Malayalam, we often use English words. These words are pronounced in the Indian English accent. For instance, when I want to say ‘fridge’ in Malayalam, I pronounce it in the Indian English way. If I were to say it in a British accent, it would sound strange. I believe this is the main reason for my accent shift.”

The video, which Klara posted on Instagram, has since gone viral. It has garnered over 638,000 views and more than 24,000 likes so far. Netizens have responded positively to Klara’s explanation, with many expressing admiration.

One user commented, “We adapt our accent to ensure the people we’re speaking to can understand us. That’s quite natural.” Another remarked, “The influence of South India, especially Kerala, is clearly reflected in your English.” A third praised her saying, “You know German, Malayalam, and Indian-accented English. That’s amazing.”
