Neeraj Chopra, the star athlete from India, finished with a historic silver medal in the men’s javelin final to bring home the nation’s sole other medal at the World Athletics Championships.
After Anju Bobby George won the bronze medal in the women’s long jump back in 2003, India had gone 29 years without winning a medal at the World Championships until Neeraj’s throw of 88.13m on his fourth try.
Chopra said he was pleased to win a medal for his nation after taking home the silver.
He continued by saying he was happy with the outcome but hoped to improve at the following World Championship.
The champion was also praised by Prime Minister Modi, who described it as a unique occasion for the nation.
