A four-story building in Gachibowli, Hyderabad, tilted on Tuesday night, causing panic among residents who ran for their lives, fearing a collapse.
The building’s occupants evacuated quickly. According to local sources, Lakshman from Manikonda constructed this building on a 60-square-yard plot in Siddiqi Nagar two years ago.
The building housed several families on rent, with a total of 30 residents.
Recently, construction work began next door, involving the excavation of a deep pit for a cellar. This excavation led to the tilting of Lakshman’s building on Tuesday night. Terrified, the tenants fled.
In one incident, Iqbal Hussain, a resident on the third floor, jumped from the building in fear, resulting in serious injuries and his subsequent hospitalization.
The situation caused panic among neighboring residents as well. Police, along with Hydra and GHMC (Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation) officials, evacuated nearby buildings as a precaution. The tilted building was demolished using hydraulic machines on Wednesday morning to prevent further danger.
Building owner Swapna, who sold agricultural land to finance the construction two years ago, stated that the large excavation next door caused the building’s instability.
While she agreed with the authorities’ decision to demolish the structure to avoid risks to surrounding areas, she demanded compensation from the neighboring plot’s owner, blaming the construction work for the incident.
Swapna expressed her distress, stating that her family, which sold land and took loans for the building, would be left destitute without adequate compensation.
