Mohammed Shami’s Sensational Start: Overthrowing Kumble’s Legacy in World Cup 2023
With his first delivery of the current edition, India’s most seasoned bowler Mohammed Shami eliminated New Zealand’s opener Will Young, making an immediate impact after being named to the starting XI. Shami was the first replacement, and the right-arm bowler immediately startled New Zealand’s batting order.
On the first pitch of the ninth over, the incident started to take place. While attempting to play a ball square of the wicket on the off side, Shami, with his signature upright seam, bowled a slightly short, good-length delivery that jagged back in a fraction, and Young ended up chopping it straight onto his stumps.
Shami also surpassed India’s illustrious spinner Anil Kumble in terms of the most wickets taken by Indians in the history of the ODI World Cup thanks to Young’s wicket. Kumble had a bowling average of 22.83 and an economy rate of 4.08 while taking 31 wickets in 18 games. In his third ODI World Cup, Shami has already claimed 32 victories in the premier competition.
