Fahadh Faasil, known for his unique and diverse roles, has a significant fanbase in Malayalam cinema.
His latest movie, ‘Dhoomam’, which was released in theaters last year, is now streaming on Aha. Directed by Pawan Kumar, let’s see how the movie fares.
Plot Summary
Avinash (Fahadh Faasil) works as the head of the sales department at a cigarette company.
His boss, Siddharth (Roshan Mathew), values Avinash’s intelligence and includes him in every business deal.
This favoritism irks Siddharth’s uncle Praveen (Vineeth), who is also a partner in the company.
A local minister (Joy Mathew) pressures Siddharth to join him in a cigarette business deal harmful to children’s health, which Avinash opposes. Viewing Avinash as an obstacle, the minister’s gang targets him. Discontent with his job,
Avinash considers resigning and conveys this to Siddharth, who refuses to accept his resignation.
One day, while Avinash and his wife Diya (Aparna Balamurali) are traveling by car, they are attacked and later regain consciousness in an isolated location.
Avinash receives a call informing him that a micro-bomb has been implanted in Diya’s body and will be detonated if he does not comply with the caller’s demands.
Avinash agrees to follow the instructions, which include delivering one crore rupees to two specified houses.
After completing the task, he learns from a TV news broadcast that Praveen has been brutally murdered and Siddharth is in the hospital with serious injuries.
Believing Avinash is responsible for the crime, police officer Prakash (Achyuth Kumar) begins searching for him.
Meanwhile, the minister’s men also start hunting Avinash. The story revolves around discovering who attacked Avinash and Diya, who implanted the micro-bomb in Diya, who killed Praveen, and the motive behind Siddharth’s targeting. The couple’s efforts to escape these troubles form the crux of the story.
Analysis
The movie, titled ‘Dhoomam’, is centered around the cigarette business. From the beginning, it maintains suspense about what happens next.
The narrative weaves through the lives of Avinash, Siddharth, the minister, and an unknown entity, keeping the audience engaged.
The concept of linking cigarette smoking to the micro-bomb in Diya’s body is intriguing. To prevent the bomb from exploding, Diya must keep smoking, adding a unique twist.
Despite the serious tone throughout, the movie does not bore the audience. Though the reasons behind the events may seem routine, the treatment keeps the curiosity alive.
Performances and Technical Aspects
The primary characters, played by Fahadh Faasil, Roshan Mathew, and Aparna Balamurali, dominate the screen and deliver justice to their roles.
The film’s photography by Preet Jayaram, background score by Poornachandra Tejaswi, and editing by Suresh Arumugam significantly support the story.
The climax is also interesting, ending with a hint of a sequel. Fans of the thriller genre are likely to enjoy this movie.
