Rohit Sharma Names Jasprit Bumrah as Potential Successor
An interesting development has taken place amid speculations about Rohit Sharma’s Test career and captaincy. According to reports, Rohit Sharma has conveyed to the senior officials of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) that he is willing to continue as the Test captain for a few more months, but they should start looking for his successor in the meantime.
This statement reportedly came during a review meeting held on Saturday to assess India’s poor performance in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy.
BCCI’s Review of Consecutive Failures
India suffered a 1-3 defeat in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy and was also whitewashed at home by New Zealand earlier, prompting the BCCI to conduct this review meeting. Along with Rohit Sharma, head coach Gautam Gambhir and chief selector Ajit Agarkar were present at the meeting.
Sources indicate that Rohit spoke at length about his plans and clearly stated his intention to continue as captain for a limited period. National media reports suggest that he emphasized his willingness to serve as captain for a few more months before transitioning leadership.
Rohit Proposes Jasprit Bumrah’s Name for Captaincy
As per a report by Dainik Jagran, Rohit Sharma proposed star pacer Jasprit Bumrah’s name as a potential candidate for the Test captaincy. However, some senior BCCI officials reportedly expressed concerns regarding Bumrah’s fitness and his ability to lead the team in a long five-match series. Given Bumrah’s history of frequent injuries, the officials are skeptical about his long-term viability as a captain.
During India’s tour of Australia, Bumrah had captained the team for two matches, including the final game in Sydney. Despite performing well initially, he had to leave the field midway due to a back injury. Considering his injury-prone nature, BCCI officials are likely to deliberate thoroughly before making any decision on appointing him as a permanent Test captain.
